Question by italianscotschick: Want to loose weight. Mountain Bike question please.. thanks?
Hi there

I am 23, 5.5 in height and weight 10.7 stone. I am pretty overweight at the moment ud eot glutony and not enought exercise and do not like it. I am walking more and trying to avoid the bus to help with the weight loss. I have also cut back on snacks etc and but remain on a healthy diet incuding fruit and veg etc.

Ok now the question, I got my bike out the shed and now ride 2.1 miles a day to work and 2.1 miles back. its a fairly easy ride with one quite big hill at the end. Is this enough five days a week or should i take a longer route home to shed any weight?

Thanks

A

its good if you just starting off as its nothing your body cant handle but still a good exercise. Once you get fitter and stronger you might want to make the ride harder because your body’s only gonna lose weight wen u use up more energy than you have. therefore once you get more fit ride for longer times or up more hills.

Add in running or other cardio workouts too to help.

but remember ta check with your doctor if its ok cos you dunt wanna hurt yourself exercising!

Every mountain biker has their own personal preferences about how to set their bike up and so they should, but when it comes to the question of a 29 mountain bike or 26 it is a different question to ponder.

Trying to explain it as simply as possible, a 29 mountain bike or 29er is a bike with 29″ wheels in comparison to the standard 26″ wheels that have been around since mountain biking began. Riders using a 29er report enhanced stability and control along with decreasing the jitterishness often associated with the 26er. This means more confidence and comfort on the trail and less panic attacks.

The 29 is a bit of a misnomer actually as it refers to the diameter of the entire wheel including the tire mounted instead of just the rim size. In fact the rim diameter is exactly the same as a road bike or hybrid rim, commonly referred to as 700c which is 28 and a fraction inches. These larger diameter wheels reduce the rolling resistance by approximately 10% at the same time it reduces hub resistance and tire wear also by around 10%.

The stability the rider gets as they roll over obstacles is definitely better both while climbing and descending thus enhancing the riders feeling of safety and comfort. At the same time the rider feels less fatigued after a longer ride. The tire grip especially seems to be improved while climbing on loose dirt as well as improved cornering balance. This enables the rider to climb those steep sections further before having to get off and walk to the top. One more thing you may not expect seems to be true and that is a reduced number of pinch which seem to happen too frequently on the rough stuff.

The proof that the 29er revolution is here to stay is the fact that almost all major bike manufacturers are on board and have 29″ models to choose from. Tomac Bicycles is adding the “Flint” a full-suspension option this year to their previous 29er hardtail options. Tomac like so many other manufacturers has joined other top mountain bike brands like Santa Cruz and Yeti, Specialized and Cannondale etc by embracing big wheels. While Scott bikes has a range of five 29″ hardtails to choose from.

Scott’s Spark 29 is a full suspension big wheeled mountain bike. This Scott brand mountain bike is actually reasonably lightweight even though it has an aluminum frame instead of being a carbon fiber product. The custom butted Spark Alloy frame offers 100mm travel suspension.

The new 29er’s are all the rage for Cross Country Racing. Their big wheels and full suspension is the perfect recipe for a lot of fun. Either that or it will frighten you off depending on how you look at it.

One rider said he had ridden his new bike for about two hundred miles. And he said he was pleasantly surprised by its lightness and handling and its comfortable riding position. It was also great at climbing. He said it reminded him of when he was eight years old. He also said it was the first time that a mountain bike really fit him.

Join the crowd and try out a 29 mountain bike today.

Question by finlook10: good mid priced women’s mountain bike (lighter side) ?
Hi – would like to get my fiance a hardtail mountain bike. She’s a road rider, but it would be great to have a starter bike for her for trails. Was looking to not go over the $ 600.000 price range. Would love a lighter model. Was looking at GT Avalanche 2.0 Disc Women’s Mountain Bike. Anyone have an opinion on that bike or others?

Best answer:

Answer by Zachary
in my opinion, i would get a specialized bike. they havent failed me in quailty, and they have some womens hardtails for $ 600 (myka).

that said, trek also has amazing quality frames. they are cheap and reliable, but not professional grade.

kona is great, but a little expensive, and they mainly focus on BMX/mountain bike hybrids (slopestyle, dirt jumping). however, they also have a few nice all mountain bikes, as well as downhill. but kona doesnt really have a low end. they usually start at $ 800-1000.

i have a $ 600 specialized hardtail (rockhopper), a $ 3000 all mountain specialized (enduro SL), a $ 2500 specialized downhill bike (demo), and have previously tested many kona bikes, and a few trek bikes.

PS- that is called med-low end. a bike-like-object is $ 0-150. a low end is $ 150-500. a med-low bike is $ 500-1500. a medium grade bike is about $ 1500-3500, a high end is $ 3500-6000, and professional quality starts at $ 6000 and goes up. (i have tested a $ 12,000 hardtail before!)

Trek mountain bikes offer innovative bikes for an affordable price. If you are a biker, you should know how good the Trek bikes are, because they have developed a good reputation for themselves as manufacturers who know how to produce sturdy and innovative mountain bikes. Even Lance Armstrong has many Trek bicycles.

The great thing about the bikes is that you can use them on rough roads, to race, or for recreation. People you come across while on the road will be impressed by your mountain bike. Trek are avid mountain bike fans themselves and it shows. They also respect the customer and go out of their way to offer support in various ways, be it selecting a mountain bike that fits your style, or repairing a bike that has seen some rough days.

Material that they use for the mountain bikes is OCLV, alpha aluminum, and madone. The concept group is working hard to design new mountain bikes that will make history or show up in the Tour de France.

By visiting their blog you can look at the different images and interviews they have taken while they are at sporting events.

Not only are they developing new mountain bikes, they are also expanding their innovative efforts in creating lifestyle equipment for bikers. Some of these include biking gear and water bottles. Trek has also partnered with profitable companies like Nike who sells their items for them, be it online or in one of the retail stores.

If you have not ridden a Trek mountain bike, you are missing out on something special.

Question by Sea A: Does Mountain Biking lead to Impotence or ED?
I read in an article:

“Bicycling.
Bicycling has been linked to impotence in men and also may affect the sperm count. Pressure from the bike seat may damage blood vessels and nerves that are responsible for erections. Mountain biking, which involves riding on off-road terrain, exposes the perineum (the region between the scrotum and the anus) to more extreme shocks and vibrations and increases the risk for injuries to the scrotum. ”

I have been mountain biking for the past 4 years-24/7, 15 miles a day Last time I had intercourse, I did not last for more than a minute.

The doctor said that I checked out fine. After, going to the doctor, I found the above in an article. I have not tried intercourse since. I am waiting for my confidence level to rise again. My question is, due to the mountain bike riding, could this now be a permanent problem? Any others experienced this? What did you do about it? Also I do suffer from anxiety-so I don’t know if it is just that. Any advice
